“Taking the road less traveled”

It's worth noting that hire cars are not insured on all of Crete's unpaved roads, which adds a little more spice (not to mention stress) to this part of the journey though the Katharo plateau.

The Katharo plateau is an elevated plain in eastern Crete, in the Lassithi district, in the municipality of Agios Nikolaos.

It lies at an average altitude of 1,150 m, 300 m higher than the neighboring Lassithi plateau, 12 km to the west; both are part of the Dicte massif. A rugged 12 km-long track links the two plateaus, but is only passable by all-terrain vehicles. 😅

From Kritsa, access to the plateau is via a spectacular road, steep and winding but fairly wide and in good condition, where passing other vehicles is not a problem.

The plateau owes its name to the now-abandoned hamlet of Katharo; the word “καθαρός” means “pure, clean”, which is no usurpation, as the air and water are particularly pure on this plateau.

“Lake Voulismeni”

Lake Voulismeni is the town of Agios Nikolaos' sole claim to fame, and it is here that most of the tourist activity is concentrated.

It's actually a former enclosed lake, now opened to the sea by a canal dug at the end of the 19th century. Its shape is quite circular. A pedestrian walkway runs partially around it, the end of which is rendered inaccessible by the presence of a cliff. Today, the lake has become the town's harbour, where the fishermen of Agios Nikolaos moor their small boats.

Every year, at midnight on Orthodox Easter, the town's inhabitants gather here to celebrate with a fireworks display.

Legend also has it that the goddess Athena bathed in this reputedly bottomless lake.

“Traditional Greek kaikia in Sitia's harbour”

Since ancient times, the islands and coastal areas of Greece had boatyards where wooden ships were built. Wooden ships, also known in Greek as kaikia (aka caïque), played an important role in the economy.

These boats had unique technical, typological and cultural features, some of which dated back to the Byzantine-medieval era.

In 2013, the kaikia was added to Greece’s National Index of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Sadly, however, these works of art are today being destroyed after the European Union decided in 1983 to subsidize fishermen to scrap their boats. The initial reasoning behind this questionable decision was to tackle overfishing.

Besides the EU’s irrational decision which failed to consider the importance of the kaikia tradition for Greece, decades of inactivity on the part of Greek officials led to the destruction of thousands of handmade wooden boats.

Wooden house.

Don’t be fooled. This is NOT the oldest house in #Antwerp. However, it is the oldest house in Antwerp with a wooden facade. Dating from 1546 it has survived 6 wars although sadly, due to a restoration in the ‘70s the facade has had a transformation and isn’t original anymore.

“Vai beach”

Nestled on the east coast of Crete, Vai beach offers a unique paradise unlike any other in Greece. Its main attraction is Europe's largest natural palm forest, creating an exotic atmosphere with thousands of Cretan date palms swaying gently in the breeze.

Beyond its botanical marvel, the beach itself boasts soft, golden sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, sunbathing and soaking up the magnificent scenery.

Vai beach is not part of any civic unit of the local civic division of Greece, Lasithi. It is not itself an official village. The region is somewhat isolated on the isolated northeast peninsula of Crete. Until after WWII, this land was owned by Toplou Monastery.

“Reconstructed north entrance of the Palace of Minos in Knossos”

Knossos is a Bronze Age archaeological site in Crete.

It was a major centre of the Minoan civilization and is known for its association with the Greek myth of Theseus and the minotaur.

Knossos is considered by many to be the oldest city in Europe.
