“Taking the road less traveled”

It's worth noting that hire cars are not insured on all of Crete's unpaved roads, which adds a little more spice (not to mention stress) to this part of the journey though the Katharo plateau.

The Katharo plateau is an elevated plain in eastern Crete, in the Lassithi district, in the municipality of Agios Nikolaos.

It lies at an average altitude of 1,150 m, 300 m higher than the neighboring Lassithi plateau, 12 km to the west; both are part of the Dicte massif. A rugged 12 km-long track links the two plateaus, but is only passable by all-terrain vehicles. 😅

From Kritsa, access to the plateau is via a spectacular road, steep and winding but fairly wide and in good condition, where passing other vehicles is not a problem.

The plateau owes its name to the now-abandoned hamlet of Katharo; the word “καθαρός” means “pure, clean”, which is no usurpation, as the air and water are particularly pure on this plateau.

You have to travel through British Columbia to get to Point Roberts, Wa., and it's usually full of Canadians, visiting their vacation homes or nipping across the border for cheaper gas. These days, the community of 1,000 people is receiving just a trickle of visitors from across the border, and some locals view Trump's tariffs as an existential threat. "Ninety percent of our economic activity comes from British Columbia," says Point Roberts resident Brian Calder. "Take that away ... and we're done." Here's more from @cbcnews on concerns beyond the tourist trade — electricity and water are also supplied by B.C. to Point Roberts — and how the community came to be part of the USA.

“Lake Voulismeni”

Lake Voulismeni is the town of Agios Nikolaos' sole claim to fame, and it is here that most of the tourist activity is concentrated.

It's actually a former enclosed lake, now opened to the sea by a canal dug at the end of the 19th century. Its shape is quite circular. A pedestrian walkway runs partially around it, the end of which is rendered inaccessible by the presence of a cliff. Today, the lake has become the town's harbour, where the fishermen of Agios Nikolaos moor their small boats.

Every year, at midnight on Orthodox Easter, the town's inhabitants gather here to celebrate with a fireworks display.

Legend also has it that the goddess Athena bathed in this reputedly bottomless lake.

The Skiff La Yole 1875 Renoir The National Gallery London England

This sunlit scene on the river Seine is typical of the imagery that has come to characterise Impressionism, and Renoir includes several familiar Impressionist motifs such as fashionably dressed women, a rowing boat, a sail boat, and a steam train crossing a bridge.
