#calligraphy #illumination #medieval
I've just finished my design for Earby Medieval Mayhem (11th May, 2025)! The shield is the crest of Pendle district, with the white and red Yorkshire and Lancashire roses as Earby straddles the county boundary. Painted in Clip Studio Paint using a vellum background from my great-grandmother's diary (sic - long story).
I've had such fun designing this - I don't think it will be my last medieval illustration!
I love this beautiful tome of #calligraphy from the 1500s, the Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta ("Wonderful Monuments of Calligraphy"). A compendium of writing styles later illuminated with #fruit and #insect drawings.

The scans are super high res but... wonky, so I decided to clean them up and post them suitable for prints. Because the public domain scans are so high res, you can get huge prints. Also mugs, stationary, stickers, puzzles, etc.
Glowing landscape after the storm.

Good morning Fediverse, here is an older #illumination I painted back in 2017, on vellum. The background is gold leaves on a 3D undercoat called "gesso". It is taken from the Aberdeen Bestiary, and it depicts an asp viper and a man. See alt text for the story!
And, yes, now I use a ruler for the outer frame... LOL
Do you like it?
Une très belle lettrine enluminée pour #JeudiManuscrit, extraite du "Compte de recepte et dépense des deniers de l'Aumône générale de Lyon tenu par Symphorien Thellusson" en 1555.
Que de beauté pour un livre de comptes !

#Paramatma, the universal soul or supreme consciousness in #Hindu #philosophy, parallels #Neoplatonism’s concept of “The One”.
In Neoplatonism, emanation from “The One” mirrors the dynamic interplay of prakāśa (#illumination) and vimarśa (#reflection) in Paramādvaita philosophy, emphasizing a cyclical process of outflow and return.
The #Nous is compared to Paramatma but aligns more closely with Hiranyagarbha in Hindu thought due to its subordinate role to the ultimate #FirstPrinciples.
Done!
Can't really see in these pics but the green calligraphy ink has a bit of a shimmer to it too.
It's on A4 size heavyweight paper.
Edit: sold!

Boar hunting, from the "Livre de Chasse" (Hunting Book) of Gaston Phébus, Count of Foix.
I painted that one with a magnifying glass, and homemade colours mixed from powdered pigments. It took me 40ish hours to complete... Size is 23 x 25 centimetres.
I'm not fond of hunting, not at all, but I am sometimes asked to paint things I don't like What do you think of it?
Roughly an hour and a half of work. Still got the other three acanthus corner boxes to do but need a break now.
See videos of me drawing some of it here:
